Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he liked participating in different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really competitive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing high school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little bit and relocated to New York to participate in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he played many hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some extra money by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he could better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and concentrate even more on poker.
The actual improvement in his game happened when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable players would regularly wager against one another. He had access into a number of the best minds in chess. With their help, he would tweak his strategic thinking abilities. He applied these strategic concepts to the game of NL hold’em.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard moved to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
